This 5-day training course presents topics related to generator protection technical implementation. The course made as a reference guide for generator protection. Protection relays that are described in this course are applicable to one or more generator protection schemes.

There are several protection relay types used for protection against a wide variety of conditions. These protection relays protect the generator or prime mover from damage. Also, they are used for protection of the external power system or the processes it supplies. The basic principles that are described in this course apply equally to individual relays and to multifunction numeric relays

Key topics covered in this training course include:

  • Identification of the protection requirements of synchronous generators.
  • Applying generation system protection principles.
  • Identifying and selecting appropriate protection schemes for various generator applications.
  • Determine settings for system backup using phase distance and overcurrent elements.
  • Apply high- and low-impedance neutral grounding techniques.
  • Calculate settings for critical generator protection elements, including differential and ground faults, out of step protection, Loss of field, overexcitation, etc.
